The Undone Worshipper

Several years ago, I read a book entitled, The Unquenchable Worshipper: Coming Back to the Heart of Worship, by Matt Redman. I was impressed by this little book and subsequently wrote a series of devotions for my own reflection on its themes. Here is the second devotion I wrote. I hope it blesses you. (BTW I maintained the author’s spelling of “worshipper” because he is English and that is how the English spell the word. It also makes me look cosmopolitan.)

The Undone Worshipper…encounters God in an altogether different manner.  It is a Holy moment marked by discomfort and soul-searching.  This worshipper apprehends the Lord Almighty so distinctively that he will never be the same again.  He realizes God’s greatness, and in the midst of that, his own weakness.  He would echo the cry of the prophet, “Woe is me, for I am undone.”  This one is broken, stunned and shaken in the presence of God.  But this is not a destructive thing.  God is preparing this kind of worshipper for him to cry out later, “Here am I, send me.”

What this worshipper is all about is the realization that rising to the surface of his heart come those little unspoken attitudes and thoughts that have passed by unnoticed and which he now sees have offended the very heart of God Himself.  The worshipper’s hidden heart is revealed for what it really is before the Most Holy, Most Powerful, Most Glorious, Most Present, Most Wise, Most Pure and Most Loving.  And the worshipper’s heart is in contradiction to the heart of God.  It is a reminder that God first speaks to us when we are nothing, have nothing and do nothing to deserve His presence, but to exist as the object of His love.  Sometimes He leaves us with a limp to help us retain this knowledge of Himself.

Prayer:

O God, make us know who we really are before You.  Help us to honor You in this realization, crying out to You alone as we acknowledge Your awesome nature.  Remind us, even with our frailty, that You have prepared us in stripping away all that would hinder us from approaching You aright, and doing what You will in and through us.  Makes us undone worshippers, as You see fit.

In Christ’s revealing power.  Amen.
